This collection pertains to the manuscript collecting activities of Mr. Harry Lee Dalton. Included are 26 items of correspondence to and from other collectors, a folder of dealers' manuscript and incunabula lists, various clippings saved by Mr. Dalton, and a group of printed items and miscellany. The last group includes a genealogical survey of the Dalton family. An addition to the collection documents the unveiling of the portrait of Mr. Dalton in the Manuscripts Department, April 5, 1979, including the invitation to the unveiling, a guest list for the luncheon preceding the unveiling, a clipping from the Duke Alumni Register, a cassette tape of the unveiling ceremony, and 19 photographs.

Harry Lee Dalton was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on June 13, 1895 to Corine McCanless and Rufus I. Dalton. A graduate of Trinity College (now Duke University), he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I. Dalton had a successful career in textiles and finance and served as an officer and investor in numerous companies, including Wachovia Bank and Trust. He and his wife, Mary Keesler, collected art, rare books, and manuscripts, and made many contributions to art museums and libraries...
